All that glory and I missed it

December 10th, 2009 (09:34 pm)

I just did a re-read of one of my all-time favorite series, the Queen's Thief set, by Megan Whalen Turner. Brief plug for the books: the first is The Thief, which won the Newbery Honor, the second is The Queen of Attolia which breaks your heart in a dozen wonderful ways, and third is The King of Attolia, which is the best so far, in my opinion. Each one has a different narrator and unexpected and wonderful twists. The fourth book, A Conspiracy of Kings, is due to come out this spring.

That's all for the folks on my friends list who don't know the books. The people who will actually want to see the entry probably already know all of that. :) In the midst of my re-read I noted some quotes from the book and made some graphics from them. I had made some previously and in a few cases I didn't redo a quote I did in that post, so if you're looking for a particular quote and it's not here, you might try there. Also, if you have a quote from the books you'd like me to make into a graphic, just let me know!

ANYWAY. I have:
9 Thief quotes
21 QoA quotes
20 KoA quotes
For each book there are also several based on the paperback cover art.

Ooh. I had never read this series until I saw your last icon post for it. Thank you for mentioning it. It's brilliant! Queen of Attolia is my favourite. I'm going to convince my eleven year old to read it next.

These are all stunning so I am not quite sure where to begin but I will definitely snag 1, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, 18, 21, 24, 26, 28, 33, possibly all of them. Will credit when I use. :)

MWT - Throw more Inkpots

Will you report back on what your 11-year-old thinks of the books? Because a few of my fellow MWT readers and I have been having a discussion about this, and wondering how much the books actually do appeal/make sense to the 10-15 year olds they're supposedly aimed at...

I've tried to channel my inner tween and imagine what my reaction to these books would have been at that age, and I keep thinking I would have been bored and confused by the politics and angry at Certain Hand-Related Events, and probably not even finished the series. But I would be delighted to find out that I am wrong about this and that tweens and young teens love the series as much as we stuffy grown-up types do. :)

I actually remember picking up The Thief in middle school and being totally put off by the cover, which was this one and the blurb on the back. I think that I might have read it had it been the new paperback edition. I don't know if I would have enjoyed it or not, though I suppose if I had already read Dickens, Austen, and Shakespeare, I might have.

I was that age when I first read this series. I quite liked it, actually. But I think if I reread it now I'd see more of the layers.

Turner quote

(jellybeanie87 only signed in differently)

Really? That makes me beyond happy! I'm glad you like it--QoA and KoA go back and forth between being my favorite, but in the end I think the growing relationship between *cough* certain characters in KoA wins me over. Thank you! :D

[queen's thief] calf love

Um, these are all pretty much awesome. I don't even know which ones I'm snagging but I'll probably take nearly all of them.

They make me a bit sad, though, 'cause some of them I don't recognize. T_T I must reread the series!!!

Tennyson quote

Thanks! I'm an obsessive quote gatherer, so I went through with my notebook and wrote down everything I thought was the least bit funny. Some of my favorites were too long to stick on a user pic, alas.

MWT - Pawn of the Gods quote

29, 43, and 50 -- at this rate I'll soon have more MWT icons than anything else! Beautiful work, great quotes, thanks for doing this!

(And it makes me want to send you CoK just so you can make more text icons, but then the MWT community would rise up and kill me for spoiling them.)

You're welcome!

You could always send it to me anyway and just wait until whenever they actually release it for the quotes. :) (Kidding.)

So I happened to mention that the problem with book fandoms is the difficulty in iconning them, and someone pointed me here for my Attolia icon needs--yay!!! Snagging 23 and will credit, of course.
